The Washington Post Design Director, Emerging News Products, 2013-2019

As Design Director for Emerging News Products at the Washington Post, I led a team of 18 designers, art directors, multiplatform editors and video editors building new products to reach new audiences. I started at the Post in 2013 as an art director in a print-focused role before moving into digital, eventually becoming Design Director overseeing the visual team and a full design refresh of the Washington Post Select app. The goal was always the same: a clean, visual reading experience that felt distinct from everything else out there.

All work on this page was designed by myself or someone on the design team I managed at The Washington Post. I designed, art directed or illustrated the vast majority of it. All of the print work was designed and art directed by me.

During my time leading this team was when I created The Lily, a publication I pitched and launched within the Washington Post, reviving the name of the first newspaper in the United States written and edited by women. The mission was to bring Post journalism to a new and younger audience, with a visual identity and editorial voice I developed from scratch. It became an instantly recognizable brand, and the experience proved that a strong, distinct identity could build something people genuinely wanted to be part of inside a major newsroom.

That informed what we did next. Another editor launched sub brand By the Way, the Post's travel destination featuring city guides written by locals. I oversaw the visual brand strategy, guided the design direction and commissioned the logo from Heads of State — giving it its own distinct identity while keeping it at home within the Washington Post ecosystem.

I also co-led the launch of the Washington Post's Discover channel on Snapchat, becoming the first breaking news platform on the app in February 2017. That meant learning a completely new format and shaping our visual and editorial approach specifically for the platform.

Running this team was a rewarding experience. I had a hand in hiring each person and built a group that was ambitious, curious and full of ideas.
